Under the provisions of the Act respecting the Société d’habitation du Québec, or Quebec housing Corporation (SHQ), the Kativik Municipal Housing Bureau (KMHB) was established following a request from the Kativik Regional Government (KRG). It became operational in 2000. The KMHB was the first bureau to operate at a regional level.

Supported by a team of over 220 employees, 75% of which are Inuit, we work hard to provide safer and more comfortable housing to our tenants. In early 2021, the housing stock consisted of 3,626 units.

MISSION

The Kativik Municipal Housing Bureau provides comfortable, safe and affordable homes adapted to Inuit needs and culture. Through its programs and services, it contributes to the development of vibrant, sustainable and safe communities.

BOARDS OF DIRECTORS

The KMHB is governed by a board of directors.

The Board’s role is to ensure that the KMHB’s mission be fulfilled to the best of its ability and according to the mandates of the Quebec Housing Corporation (SHQ). Its primary mission is to provide quality social housing for the Nunavik population.

Members’ responsibilities are the following:

• Develop and disseminate the KMHB’s vision on social housing;
• Ensure good governance at the KMHB;
• Participate in the KMHB’s long-term vision;
• Develop links with the community.

The Board of directors is composed of 7 members, each serving a 3-year term, as follows:

• 3 are appointed by the Kativik Regional Government;
• 2 are elected among KMHB tenants; and
• 2 others are appointed by the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy.

LOCAL HOUSING COMMITTEE

The local housing committee is mandated to review applications and make recommendations to the KMHB’s Client Services to determine future tenants and relocate actual tenants. The committee may also make recommendations to improve the social housing situation in the community.

The committee holds meetings every month and when special situations arise, with a minimum of 8 meetings held annually.

The election of five members takes place every 3 years in the fall, after the municipal elections. Tenants are asked to elect 3 members and the Northern Village can also identify two council members who will sit on the local housing committee. If the Northern Village chooses not to appoint representatives, two other members are elected from among the tenants.
